featuring Emilia Sisco

Thu 24 April at 6pm, Tapiola Hall

Ricky-Tick Big Band & Tapiola Sinfonietta, featuring Emilia Sisco, conducted by Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen present: “Helsinki Noir Suite: Searching For Tapio”

What would jazz orchestra music that could only be born in Finland be like? Composer-musician Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen’s answer to this question is a ten-part, dark, intimate, prowling and multidimensional composition Helsinki Noir Suite. The subtitle “Searching For Tapio” refers to one of the main characters of the libretto, the forest spirit Tapio. The libretto has been written by Laurell Pöyhönen and E.L. Karhu, one of Finland’s leading playwrights.

The work, which premiered at the Helsinki Festival in August 2024, gains even more depth and cinematic tones when the Tapiola Sinfonietta takes to the stage with the 17-piece Ricky-Tick Big Band and vocalist Emilia Sisco. Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen has expanded the orchestrations especially for this April Jazz concert.

Helsinki Noir Suite is Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen's most extensive composition to date. It is also the most personal and distinctive. Musical influences can be heard, for example, from the Finnish popular music of the 1960s in the melodies, Sibelius and Shostakovich in the harmonies and moods, but also the influence of hip-hop producer J Dilla in the drum rhythms and modern electronic tones in the electronic textures.
